Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 pieces boneless, skinless chicken breasts (5–8 oz. each) Choose fresh chicken for the best flavor and texture.
  • 3 tablespoons butter, divided You can swap in olive oil completely for a dairy-free option.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon flour Use a gluten-free alternative if needed.
  • 1 cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup milk Consider using plant-based milk for an alternative.
  • 1/4 cup sour cream Plain Greek yogurt can substitute for a healthier option.
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 (1 oz.) packet Ranch seasoning mix Feel free to experiment with homemade ranch seasoning.
Garnishes
  • Fresh parsley To garnish (optional).

Method

Preparation
  1. Pound the chicken breasts to an even 1” thickness using a meat mallet, then season both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. In a skillet over medium-high heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add olive oil. Sear the chicken until golden brown, roughly 4-5 minutes per side. Remove to a plate and set aside.
  3. Lower the heat to low and add the remaining butter. Stir in flour and cook for about one minute, letting it turn slightly golden.
  4. Pour in chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the pan—this adds great flavor!
  5. Add milk, sour cream, onion powder, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and ranch seasoning mix. Stir well until the mixture combines into a smooth sauce.
  6. Return the chicken and any plate juices back to the pan. Spoon the sauce generously over the chicken and let it simmer until heated through and slightly thickened.
  7. Dish up the creamy ranch chicken hot, topped with fresh parsley if using. Enjoy this delightful dish with your favorite sides!

Notes

Consider grilling the chicken instead of pan-searing for a different but equally delicious dish. Make ahead by preparing the sauce a day in advance.
