Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 3 pieces chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces Select fresh, plump chicken breasts.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup chicken broth Use low-sodium if preferred.
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce Consider low-sodium.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce See alternatives if needed.
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 6 cups broccoli, cut into bite-sized pieces Choose vibrant green florets.
  • Green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. Season the chicken with garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and paprika.
  2. In the crockpot, combine chicken broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, and hoisin sauce. Add the seasoned chicken and toss to coat thoroughly.
Cooking
  1. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or HIGH for 2 to 3 hours, until the chicken is tender.
  2. Remove 1/4 cup of sauce from the crockpot, and mix it with the cornstarch until smooth. Pour it back into the crockpot and stir to combine for a thicker sauce.
  3. Add the broccoli on top of the chicken mixture, cover, and cook on HIGH for an additional 20 minutes, until the sauce thickens and the broccoli becomes tender-crisp.
Serving
  1. Serve hot over rice, noodles, or cauliflower rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.

Notes

To save time, prepare the chicken and sauce ahead of time and refrigerate. This dish can be made vegan by substituting chicken with firm tofu.
