  • 1 cup sour cream Plain Greek yogurt is a protein-rich swap.
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided Freshly shredded melts better than pre-shredded.
  • 1/2 cup green onions, sliced Use green and tender white parts for flavor.
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds Toast lightly to enhance flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Can substitute with fresh garlic for stronger flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Freshly cracked is preferable.
  • 1 sleeve Ritz crackers, crushed Use gluten-free crackers for a gluten-free version.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Clarified butter can be used for different flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 dish.
  2. Whisk together cream of chicken soup, sour cream, garlic powder, and black pepper in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Fold in the shredded chicken, 1.5 cups of cheddar cheese, green onions, and slivered almonds gently.
  4. Spread the mixture evenly into the baking dish.
Topping
  1. In a separate bowl, mix crushed Ritz crackers, melted butter, and the remaining cheddar cheese.
  2. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the chicken base.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  2. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Allowing the casserole to rest helps to set the filling.
