Ingredients

For the meat filling
  • 1 pound ground meat (beef or lamb) Choose beef or lamb for traditional flavor. For a leaner option, select 90 percent lean beef or mix in finely chopped mushrooms for added umami.
  • 1 onion, chopped Pick a firm, glossy onion with no soft spots.
  • 2 carrots, diced Fresh, vibrant carrots add sweetness and texture.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Use fresh garlic for the brightest aroma; pre-minced works in a pinch.
  • 1 cup peas Frozen peas are fine; add them toward the end to preserve texture.
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste Tomato paste deepens the richness; if you do not have it, a tablespoon of tomato sauce can substitute.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce A splash adds savoriness; substitute with soy sauce and a pinch of lemon juice if avoiding.
  • 1 teaspoon thyme Dried or fresh thyme both work; fresh herbs are preferred if available.
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the mashed potatoes
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped Starchy potatoes like Russets yield light, fluffy mash.
  • 1/2 cup milk Use whole or two percent for creamier mash, or plant-based milk for dairy-free.
  • 1/4 cup butter Butter adds richness; substitute with olive oil for dairy-free.

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a skillet, brown the ground meat over medium heat until fully cooked.
  3. Add onions, carrots, and garlic; cook until vegetables are tender.
  4. Stir in peas, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper; cook for a few more minutes.
  5. In a pot, boil potatoes until tender, drain, and mash with milk and butter.

  2. Top with mashed potatoes and smooth out.
