Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks
  • 1 cup Baby Portabello Mushrooms (Sliced) Adds depth and flavor.
  • 1 piece Onion (Thinly sliced)
  • 1 1/3 pounds Lean Ground Beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1 tablespoon Steak Seasoning Use salt and pepper for a milder flavor.
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce (Divided) Essential for umami flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Onion Flakes
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Parsley
  • 1/2 cup Breadcrumbs (Plain or Italian) Ensure they are fresh.
  • 1 piece Egg Acts as a binder.
  • 3 tablespoons Cornstarch (Divided) Used to thicken gravy.
  • 2 cups Beef Broth Can substitute with vegetable broth for a vegan option.
  • 1/8 teaspoon Black Pepper

Method

Preparation
  1. Spray a large, 6-quart oval slow cooker with cooking spray. Add the sliced mushrooms and onions to the bottom.
  2. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, steak seasoning, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, dried onion flakes, parsley, breadcrumbs, and egg. Mix well until fully integrated.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4-6 patties, forming each into an oval shape and placing them evenly in the slow cooker.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the beef broth, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons of cornstarch, and black pepper until smooth. Pour this mixture over the patties.
Cooking
  1. Cover with the lid and cook on high for 4 hours.
Finishing Touches
  1. Remove the steaks from the slow cooker once done.
  2. In a small bowl, mix one tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water, then stir this mixture into the gravy to thicken.
  3. Serve each Salisbury steak with mushroom and onion gravy over egg noodles or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!

Notes

For a vegan option, replace beef with lentils and beef broth with vegetable broth. Consider additions like garlic for extra flavor.
